Después de haber dado a conocer su deseo de adoptar a un niño ucraniano de 14 meses de edad, llamado Lev, el cual se encuentra infectado por el virus del Sida, el cantante Elton John y su pareja sentimental David Furnish fueron notificados por las autoridades de Ucrania que dicha petición no puede ser concretada, bajo el argumento de que la unión civil entre Elton y David no es reconocida en aquel país ya que sólo consideran válido como matrimonio la unión entre un hombre y mujer.
Asimismo las voces de las iglesias se han levantado en contra, debido a que han criticado fuertemente el estilo de vida de Elton John por el simple hecho de ser homosexual.
Sin embargo, después de toda la polémica suscitada, las autoridades aseguran que si bien, por las leyes que los rigen, las parejas gay no pueden accesar a dicho derecho, si están en la posibilidad de apadrinar al pequeño Lev.
Cabe señalar que el niño es huérfano de padre, quien falleció de Sida, ya que su madre aún vive, sin embargo, Lev y su hermano mayor se encuentran en un orfanato donde sólo habitan niños infectados de padres fallecidos consecuencia de la enfermedad, de ahí el deseo del cantante y su pareja homosexual de sacarlo de dicho lugar y darle una familia.
